What is PPS?
Core positioning: Excellent chemical resistance, high continuous service temperature and high rigidity; natural resin meets UL94 V0 flame retardant standard.
Limitations: Unfilled neat PPS has low toughness and high brittleness. Glass fiber / carbon fiber filled modification can greatly improve mechanical strength and wear resistance, yet moderately reduce chemical resistance.
Core Basic Properties
✅ Excellent chemical resistance; continuous service temperature 200~240°C (varies by grade and load condition); natural UL94 V0 flame retardancy; good dimensional stability; low water absorption; favorable creep resistance
⚠️ Neat PPS has poor toughness; shrinkage occurs during crystalline molding; vulnerable to strong oxidizing media; some grades have weak impact resistance
Main Advantages of PPS
Outstanding chemical corrosion resistance: Resists most acids, alkalis, salt solutions and organic solvents. Hardly soluble in any solvent at ambient temperature. Only high-temperature strong oxidizing media (concentrated nitric acid, hot hypochlorite, etc.) cause erosion. Its chemical resistance ranks among the top of thermoplastic engineering plastics.
Superior high-temperature performance: Continuous service temperature up to 200~240°C, withstand higher short-term peak temperatures. Mechanical and chemical stability are well retained under high temperature.
Inherent flame retardancy: No extra flame retardant additives required for the resin itself to reach UL94 V‑0 rating, with low smoke emission during combustion.
Ultra-low water absorption & excellent dimensional stability: Minimal water uptake, small dimensional change caused by temperature and humidity fluctuation, suitable for precision parts.
Good creep resistance: Creep deformation under sustained high-temperature load outperforms PC and neat PTFE, suitable for high-temperature pressure-bearing structural parts.
Melt-processable & high molding efficiency: Processable via injection molding and extrusion. Complex structural parts can be directly molded for mass production, with secondary machining available.
Favorable electrical properties: Stable insulation and low dielectric loss at high temperatures, applicable for high-temperature electrical components.
Main Limitations of PPS
Neat PPS lacks toughness and is brittle
Unfilled neat PPS features low impact strength, limited impact resistance and high notch sensitivity. Glass fiber reinforced grades are adopted for most engineering applications.
Not resistant to high-temperature strong oxidizing media
Great chemical resistance at room temperature. However, hot concentrated nitric acid and hot strong oxidizing salt solutions can break molecular chains and induce material corrosion and cracking.
Molding shrinkage due to crystallization
As a crystalline plastic, PPS has molding shrinkage during injection molding. Shrinkage allowance must be reserved in mold design. Molding parameters affect crystallinity and final part dimension.
Filled modification slightly reduces chemical resistance
Glass fiber or carbon fiber filling improves rigidity and wear resistance. However, the interface between filler and resin is prone to medium penetration. Grades need evaluation under heavy corrosion conditions.
Moderate bonding difficulty
Ordinary adhesives deliver limited bonding strength. Thermal welding or plasma surface treatment can enhance bonding performance.
Main PPS Grades & Application Scope
Neat PPS (unfilled)
Features: Optimal chemical resistance, poor toughness
Applications: Lining for corrosive media, a small number of high-purity fluid components
Glass Fiber Reinforced PPS (GF-PPS, most widely used in industry)
Features: Glass fiber filled to greatly enhance rigidity, strength and heat resistance
Applications: High-temperature chemical valve parts, pump bodies, electrical connectors
Carbon Fiber Filled PPS
Features: Improved wear resistance, conductive property and reduced friction coefficient
Applications: Sliding bushings, anti-static components
Mineral Filled PPS
Features: Low warpage and further enhanced dimensional stability
Applications: Precision electrical parts
Glass fiber + PTFE blended modified PPS
Features: Combines PPS rigidity & heat resistance with PTFE’s low-friction property
Applications: High-temperature oil-free sliding parts
Typical Application Fields
Chemical equipment: High-temperature corrosion-resistant pump & valve components, flowmeter housings, anti-corrosion joints
Electronics & Electrical: High-temperature connectors, relay bases, power device insulators
Mechanical friction parts: High-temperature sliding bushings, thrust washers (carbon fiber / PTFE blended grades)
Automotive industry: High-temperature components around engines
Water treatment: High-temperature medium filter assemblies
Practical Material Selection Tips
✅ High temperature + moderate / strong corrosion with mechanical load → Prefer glass fiber reinforced PPS
✅ High-temperature electrical parts requiring inherent flame retardancy → Select PPS
✅ High-temperature oil-free sliding friction conditions → Choose PPS+PTFE blended grades
✅ Transparent parts → PPS not recommended (crystalline material is inherently opaque)
❌ Pitfall Reminders:
PPS is not suitable for environments with high-temperature strong oxidizing media. Neat PPS has poor toughness; glass fiber modified grades are preferred for impact-loaded applications. Crystallization shrinkage must be considered in mold design. Filled grades carry risks of medium penetration along interfaces. Evaluation is mandatory before use for ultra-high purity media service. Use cautiously under low-temperature heavy impact conditions.
PPS is a high-performance crystalline special engineering plastic with high application value under high temperature, corrosion and wear scenarios. When selecting grades, fully consider service conditions including medium, temperature and load to pick proper modified grades and avoid application limits caused by low toughness and strong oxidizing media.
